If you happen to be walking the corridor, you’ll find yourself walking in a winter wonderland. You might find some of our local businesses decorated in a romantic and story-like white wonderland theme – all handmade decorations generously donated to Adams Morgan by the Danish Embassy. The lovely and unique storefront decorations feature sustainable designs created by hand, using old newspapers, recycling office printed copy paper, coffeehouse filters and napkins. The original unique design and concept was brought together by student designers, Caryn Cramer, Breeze Giannasio, Louise Havndrup, Brittany Watson, and Tiersdag Kjøller. The students worked in association with The Danish Design School and the Corcoran College of Art and Design to showcase an authentically Danish aesthetic using only sustainable materials. Weeks of crafting resulted in a frosty forest filled with papier-mâché animals and meticulously sculpted rose bushes, all inspired by the classic fairy tale The Snow Queen, written by Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark’s most beloved author. |

The symbolism of the transnational collaboration weaves the issue of sustainability combined with Danish heritage and elements of the Danish fairy tale story of Hans Cristian Anderson’s The Snow Queen. The installation uses the Snow Queen as a parable, in a sense, for efforts to counteract climate change. The work references climate change, nature's abundance, and the inexorable power of people working in unison with each other and nature. |
